Technical Sergeant William Mashaw was serving aboard the B 24 Liberator J, #42-109871 when it disappeared on a mission in Chichi Jima on the morning of January 22, 1945. Mashaw was listed as Missing in Action and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Purple Heart.
