    Captain Shane Mahaffee in the U.S. Army, 36, of Gurnee, IL, lost his life in the service of this country. He was born June 5, 1969 in Champaign, IL. He graduated high school in Alexandria, VA in 1987, graduated from Evangel University, Springfield, MO in 1991 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. While on active reserves he graduated from Weidner College of Law in Harrisburg, PA. Upon graduation he moved to Waukegan, IL, and began the practice of law. He continued the practice of Law until becoming activated by the U.S. Army on January 8, 2006. He was advanced to the rank of Captain in 1998. On May 5, 2006 Captain Mahaffee was critically wounded by an IED while on patrol south of Baghdad. As a result of his injuries he received immediate medical attention and was transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He remained under treatment until he succumbed to his wounds on May 15, 2006. Shane was a loving husband to his wife Jennifer; a dear father to his children Adelia Rose, age five, and Ethan Edward, age two; dear son to his parents Steve and Betty Martin and Hannelore and Skip Mahaffee; brother to Tiffany (Don) Willett, Timothy (Tracy) Martin, Brian (Leah) Martin, Amy (Erik) Mennecke; grandson of Jean Martin and maternal grandson of Herbert Reichert. He was also loved and cherished by his in-laws, Donna (Stan) Tester, Patti (Dan) Schmeda, Eddie (Julie) Wiss, Tina (Scott) Musick; and he was also an uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.
