Silver Star Citation
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Leonard Olguin Caamano (ASN: US-56908930), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Caamano distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 28 September 1969 while serving as Senior Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team III-79, Advisory Team 98, United States Army Advisory Group, III Corps Tactical Zone, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, the element which Lieutenant Caamano was advising was participating in several air assaults on a series of hostile positions. On the final objective Lieutenant Caamano's element came under extremely heavy automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire as they assaulted from the helicopters. Due to the hail of hostile fire on them, they were immediately pinned down on the landing zone. Lieutenant Caamano immediately realized that unless the element began to fire and move towards the enemy their situation was hopeless and he began encouraging his element onward. He stood, exposing himself to the intense fire, and began assaulting the enemy. This so inspired his counterparts that they fought courageously and suppressed the enemy. First Lieutenant Caamano's conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
