My brother served with the 173rd in Vietnam in 66-67 with Co A 1/503rd Airborne Brigade. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star w/V device and OLC along with the Purple Heart and CIB. He returned to the US and assigned to the 2/504th Airborne Brigade 82nd Airborne Division until TET hit. He was transfered to Co B 1/505th and sent back (against his wishes) where he ended up outside of Hue' during the heaviest fighting. He was killed at the battle of the Lazy W near the Perfume River on 8 April 68. He was originally put in for the DSC, but since the brigade was small they fell under the command of the 101st Airborne. They downgraded his recommendation to the Silver Star. I just turned 13 when he was killed. He was my mentor and I've lived by his creed. I'm not 70 years old and his death gets harder each year. A memorial posting has been added to our local newspaper from the 1st anniversary of his death to present, first started with my mother, then I've been writing them since the 80's. My brother saved 6 wounded comrades from being killed or taken POW. His exploits and bravery saved countless lives. Read the book by Robert Dvorcheck called the Golden Brigade.
