TRIBUTES

Honor your hero with thoughts, memories, images and stories.

  • I never got to meet my uncle, Fermon Elley, because he was killed in action in Germany on March 18, 1945. He left behind many loved ones including his beloved mother Elisa, two sisters Jane and Bernice, and a brother Dayton who flew the hump during WWII and returned home to McQueeney Texas safely. Fermon was a 4th generation German descendant from the von Elterlein family in Germany. His great grandfather served as one of the first Texas Rangers who was captured and marched to Perote Prison in Mexico in 1846 by the Mexican Army and held captive there for many years. From the stories I have been told about Fermon, he was quite intelligent, spoke German fluently and actually talked many German soldiers into surrendering. He was in the 11th Armored Division and was killed in action on March 18, 1945 when the jeep he was riding in was hit during an ambush by the Germans. He will always be a hero to our family who have and still do miss him dearly. Thank you Fermon from the bottom of our hearts.
