Captain Eugene Gustafson was Killed in Action on October 28, 1944 in France, he was 24 years old… Eugene Royal Gustafson was the oldest son of Bror & Annie Gustafson and was born on March 15, 1920 in Clatskanie, Oregon, he had one brother and four sisters. He graduated from Clatskanie High School in 1938, enlisting in the Army on October 7, 1941. Eugene was sent to Officers training school and was commissioned as a 2Lt on June 24, 1942. Serving in the 36th Engineer Combat Regiment he was promoted to 1Lt right before Operation Torch and saw service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France where he was promoted to Captain. Captain Eugene Gustafson was Killed in Action during the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign and is buried at the Épinal American Cemetery and Memorial in France - Plot B Row 29 Grave 36. His only brother Russell Irving Gustafson served in the Navy during WW2, he passed away at the age of 67 on October 28, 1989.
