Seaman 2C Donald Arthur Strom was serving aboard the USS Indianapolis on July 30, 1945 when it was struck by Japanese torpedoes and sunk. Out of 1,195 crew members aboard the ship, 879 men lost their lives in the sinking and subsequent days adrift at sea. The sinking of the USS Indianapolis to this day is known as one of the worst naval disasters in US history.
