  • Calder atkinson

    Atkinson entered UNC from New Hanover High School in 1931 and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon while at the University. After graduating with a bachelor's of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1936, he enlisted as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Navy. He received his pilot’s wings and his commission as an ensign in October 1937. Atkinson was promoted to lieutenant (junior grade) in February 1941. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander, commanding Patrol Squadron 45 (VP-45). He was killed in action when the PBY-5A he was piloting was lost over the South Atlantic on May 10, 1944.
