  • Vincent Politte served in the Army Air Force as a waist gunner on The Liberator B-24. He was with the 345th Bomb Squadron and the 98th Brigade and 9th US Army Air Force. His aircraft went down over Ploesti Oil Refinery in "Operation Tidal Wave". His unidentified remains were recovered on August 3, 1943 and three years later, his remains were moved to Ardance, Belgium where he remained for more than 70 years. A positive identification was recently made and his remains are being shipped back to Leavenworth, KS. During his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
