Dennis William Alward, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Alward, of Sage township, left on Jan. 25th for Flint, where he was to be inducted into the U. S. Army. Gladwin County Record 2/2/1949 Pvt. Alward is the son of Mr. and Mrs George W. Alward, of Sage township. He is with the 67th Med. Tank Bn., 2nd Armored Div., Camp Hood, Texas. Gladwin County Record 7/27/1949 Pfc. Dennis William Alward, O. R. C , son of Mr and Mrs George Alward, of Sage Township, has been recalled to active duty with the U. S. Army. He left September 18, to report at Fort Custer. Gladwin County Record 9/20/1950 Mr and Mrs George Alward, of Sage Township from their son, Dennis, that he had arrived safely in Tokio. His address is: Pfc Dennis W. Alward, ER. 55014687, Prov. Co. Gladwin County Record 1/24/1951 In a recent letter from Pfc Dennis Alward, 55014687, by his parents, Mr and Mrs George Alward, he states that he is now stationed in Korea with the Second Army. Gladwin County Record 1/31/1951 Pfc. Dennis W. Alward, 25, was killed in action in Korea, according to a telegram received Monday by his brother, Milton. Dennis had previously been reported missing since Feb. 12 and the message stated that he was killed on that day. It read as follows: "The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deepest regret that your brother, Pfc. Dennis W. Alward, was killed in action in Korea, Feb. 12, 1951. He was previously reported missing in action the same date. Confirming letter follows. Ed F. Witsel, major general, U.S.A., adjutant general of the army." A member of the Second Infantry Division, the family believes that Dennis was in the Wonju area when he lost his life. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Alward, of Sage township. Two brothers, Milton and Lawrence, of Gladwin, also survive him. Dennis was born in Sage township November 11, 1925. He attended the rural school there until entering the Gladwin Rural Agricultural School, and graduating in 1943. He was discharged from the army in February, 1950 and placed on the reserve list but was recalled to service last October and sent to Japan Jan. 20. The next day he was flown to the Korean front. Dennis and his brother, Lawrence, operated a pulpwood business before re-entering service last fall. Gladwin County Record dated 03-28/1951 Father Receives Son’s Purple Heart: Pfc Dennis W. Alward has been posthumously awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat in Korea, which resulted in his death on February 12 of this year. It was presented to his father, George W. Alward, by Sec. of the Army Frank Pace, Jr. It was accompanied by the following memorial signed by President Truman: “He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live, and grow, and increase it’s blessings. Freedom lives and through it, He lives—in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.”---Harry S. Truman, Pres. Of the U.S. of America. Dennis was also awarded the combat medal on January 22 in Korea. Gladwin County Record 6/20/1951 SOLDIER'S BODY IS COMING HOME Mr. and Mrs. George Alward have been notified by the War Department that the body of their son, Pfc. Dennis William Alward, is enroute home from Korea. Funeral arrangements will be announced upon further advice from the War Department. Gladwin County Record dated 09-19/1951 RITES SATURDAY, PFC. DENNIS W. ALWARD Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at nine o'clock for Pfc. Dennis W. Alward, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Alward, of Sage Township. Dennis was killed in action while serving with the armed forces in Korea last February 12. His body has been brought back and will arrive in Gladwin Thursday. He is survived by his parents and two brothers, Milton and Lawrence, of Gladwin. The Rosary will be read Friday evening at nine o'clock at the Hall Funeral Home and the services Saturday will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
