Clarence M. Johnson, age 23, was killed in action when the B17G Flying Fortress on which he was the co-pilot was shot down by enemy aircraft over its target at Frankfurt, Germany. He died that day along with seven fellow crewmembers, all heroes. Two of his crew of ten bailed out and were eventually able to return home.
