  • LT(jg)Robert Scott Evarts veteran of Guadacanal and other Pacific battles, was awarde the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. Always the "hard luck" of Torpedo Eight Squadron, was shot down by AA fire during the air battle over Saipan on 20 June 1944. He ad his TBF-1C Avenger crew disappeared into the sea. His body was never recovered. He is memorialized at the Manial American Cemtery. The U.S.S. Evarts is a destroyer named after his brother Milo Evarts who was also killed in action.
