  • Obituary reprinted from Neil's memorial service at Burr Oak Lutheran Church on November 12, 1944: Born Nov. 18, 1922 of Mr. and Mrs. Benny Gilbertson. Baptized Dec. 24, 1922 in Burr Oak Lutheran Church. Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith Nov. 15, 1936. He attended Lost Nations Public School, Dist. No. 8. Entered Burr Oak High School in 1935-1936. He finished Canton High School of Canton Consolidated High School, Canton, Minn., in June, 1942. He was called in the service March 16, 1943 and went directly to Camp Polk, La., where he was given his basic training for the Glider Infantry First Allied Airborne Army, one year and then sent to England with General Brereton Commander. He had two furloughs, which he used to contact his friends in his home community and relatives before going overseas. He was killed in action September 22, 1944 when his Glider Infantry was sent to the relief of hard-pressed British troops in Holland. Neil was a friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed, not so much for any brilliant accomplishment in civil life, but for his intrepid friendship to all and for his manly determination to do his best in which he gave his life. His mother, Mrs. Jane Gilbertson, sisters Beatha Eddy and Irene Gilbertson residing in San Leandro, Calif., were unable to come. His father, Benny Gilbertson, and brother, Elmer Gilbertson, are the nearest kin present but he has a dear aunt, Mrs. Otillie Lovlien, a sister of his mother, who is present. His cousin Deloris Lovlien will pin the star to the Service Flag while Taps are sounded. May his body rest in peace in Holland until the Resurrection day. ***************************************************************** (Neil's remains were returned from Holland and buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota on February 14, 1949.)
