Captain Backus was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 22, 1967, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission near Nam Dinh, North Vietnam when his aircraft was struck by enemy fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered.
