TRIBUTES

Honor your hero with thoughts, memories, images and stories.

  • A hero I never had the privilege to know…shunning his given name, my handsome uncle preferred the nickname Tony derived from his middle name, Anthony. He was killed in WWII in Normandy before I was born. For as long as I can remember, every time my mother heard “Taps” her eyes welled with tears. Corporal Whartenby earned the Sharpshooter Weapons Qualification and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge posthumously. Youngest of six children, Uncle Tony was proud to serve his country and I am proud to be his niece.
